Workers Leaving the Factory 1895

This film is a great example of how the Lumiere Brothers were playing with the idea of depth of feild. You can see the workers from a very far off distance before they are completley in view. This is also a shot they had put some thought into. The concept of film aesthetics started with the idea of trying to fit things in a frame. This film also has a primitive "rule of thirds" happening.

Demolition of a Wall 1896

In this film the elementary ideas of composition are seen as well. Most of the action in this single shot is happening to the far left of the composition. This is becuase the wall needs to fall into the screen. This may seen incredically simplistic but the idea that they had to set up the shot so that the wall would remain in the frame when falling over is quite a leap forward in aethetics and composition as compared to just setting up a camera and filming whatever happens to happen in the frame. This planning ahead was most likely a natural move in the minds of the brothers but they were some of the first to do it. This makes this simplistic idea remarkably important in the view of film aesthetics history.

Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat 1895

This film was one of the first films created by the Lumiere brothers. This again is playing with the idea of depth of feild and basic aethetics. It curious how the people react to the filming going on. A few of them look curious about it but move on. There is also is a little bit of a myth involved with the first screening of this film. According to this myth when this film was first projected for an audience people thought the train was so realistic that they fled the theater thinking a train was going to drive straight into the audience. Is there truth to this? No one truely knows. But this film is very influencial in how it shows both the train approching and the people waiting for it at the platform. Again this shot was no randomly set up, this was thought out. The Lumiere brother's were of course photographers by trade so they understood photo aethetics, using this knowlege they helped set up some of the core basics of film aethetics as well.
