How to use Cinematize

Page history last edited by Sean Desilets 14 years, 6 months ago

We're going to run into some encryption problems here. Many dvds made now are encrypted in such a way that Cinematize can't get at them. We may be able to find a way to work around that, but for now it's just a roadblock. Assuming a non-encrypted disc, then, this is how you grab a clip using Cinematize.

  1. Bring a dvd to the first floor of the library, in the computer lab, and get Rodney Glore to set you up to use Cinematize on the computer there that's running it. You only have to do this part once.
  2. You may also want to either bring a set of headphones or borrow one at the computer lab desk (the headphone jack on that computer is unfortunately in the back, so there's some contortion involved.
  3. Put the dvd in the drive and run Cinematize
  4. Click the "+" button on the lower left of the Cinematize window
  5. Browse to the dvd (it's in the "D" drive) and open a  folder called something like "VIDEO_TS"
  6. Highlight everything you find in that window and click "Open"
  7. Cinematize will carry out a little procedure and give you a list of folders. One of them will probably be larger than the others and may be called "Video Title"--but the names seem to vary. Select that and then clip "Select File Group"
  8. This is where encryption may be a problem, in which case you're screwed
  9. Cinematize will give you a new screen with some tabs. Click on the "Output" tab and select the options to Save Quicktime Filmes as "Files with all data."
  10. Select the output format "MPEG-4"
  11. If the film you're working with has subtitles, go to the Subtitle tab and select the appropriate language in the dropdown menu
  12. Go back to the main tab. You can see that one of the dropdown menus says "chapters." Those are dvd chapters. If you select one and hit the play button, you will see the chpater you've selected. You can pause it at any point and click the "Set Start Point" radio button to determine the beginning of your clip. Do the same with the end point (the slider will move you around).
  13. Click "Extract data" and give the file a recognizable name
  14. At this point Cinematize will export a couple of different files, but one of them will be an MPEG file that, when double-clicked, will display the entire clip.

And you're done.

Ive only done this once so far, so these directions may be imperfect. Feel free to edit them after you've managed to make the thing work.
